Dothan and the Wiregrass Area

Geographically located in the southeast corner of Alabama, Dothan and the surrounding area is affectionately called “The Wiregrass,” named for Aristida stricta, a warm-season grass native to North America that dominated the area. Wiregrass communities include Dothan, is one of the region’s most progressive cities. The community offers a mild winter climate, affordable housing, low property taxes and a wide variety of products and services that includes health care, education, shopping and cultural entertainment. Located a few short miles from the state lines of Florida and Georgia, the area embraces the best that life has to offer, providing its residents not only modern conveniences and amenities of much larger cities, but also retains the charm and friendliness of the South. Dothan has good neighbors in the cities of Enterprise and Ozark, located just west and northwest of Dothan. The metro area is home to more than 500,000 with jobs centering in the Services (22%), Manufacturing (19%), Retail (18%), Government (17%), Construction (6%), Transportation (6%), Agriculture (4%), Finance (4%) and Trade (4%) sectors.  Ft. Rucker (Home of Army Aviation) hosts 5,000 active duty soldiers with a base population of 14,000.

The Wiregrass area boasts many venues of art and culture, and also some of the world’s best golf courses and recreation. The tropical climate provides a perfect place to play year round, whether you are interested in fishing, hunting, golf, swimming, tennis, baseball or softball. The area’s municipalities manage multiple parks, outdoor swimming pools, a water park, recreation centers, tennis courts (including a 20-court fast-dry complex built to professional standards), softball complexes, baseball complexes and additional playing areas for field team sports like soccer and football. Dothan hosts the Robert Trent Golf Trail at Highland Oaks.

Hunting, fishing, bird watching or just the general enjoyment of the natural world can also be discovered in the region. Nearby lakes, rivers, public or private gardens, state and national parks, the Gulf of Mexico and other natural open areas will take your breath away with their beauty, simplicity and managed care.

The Wiregrass is a great place to visit and an even better place to live!
